The complicated art of making music and being happy
Influential artists often say you should not care about anything but the art itself.
Do what you feel like doing, the rest is secondary, because great art only comes from a deep honest place.
Why? Because people only connect to real emotions, and if they care about your art, you have succeeded.
But you shouldn't care about success, because the point of art is to make it for you.
If you're an artist, then you must make art, what for doesn't really count.
Then there's the work.
Is the music business a rigged lottery? Yes
Can you be lazy? No
Great art implies serious work, and it's never really serious when it's a hobby.
A hobby isn't work.
This means exposing your art to the world.
It's a difficult thing to do, to show everyone a vulnerable picture of your true self.
Does it mean successful artists care more about their art than about themselves?
Yet isn't everybody selfish?
How can they be happy?
I think that to be happy as an artist, you should do it with people.
The art of music is playing, and playing alone is no fun.
